Noteworthy in 2004

 


    Officers Retreat

The year began with an Officers Retreat held in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The retreat was held February 5-7, 2004 and was attended by Mary Harden, Dee Dee Strum, and Colleen Smith. Founding member Atty. Fay Williams, national board member Dee Dee Sturm and national program chair Mary Harden were presenters. The Retreat was chaired by Dee Dee Strum. Detra Perry produced the marketing collateral for the event.


    Legislative Day 2004

The following members traveled to Washington, D.C. to spend the day on Capital Hill: Dee Dee Strum, Mary Harden, Dorothy Oldham, Ann Gray, Phyllis Patterson, Michelle Gude Bryant and Detra Perry. Legislative Day was held on Thursday, March 11, 2003.

    President’s Roundtable

Colleen Bolden Smith joined Mary Harden in representing NC100BW in The President’s Roundtable (PRT).  The purpose of PRT is to bring together diverse organizations of women involved in community service, sharing information, building relationships and participating in collaborative projects to improve the quality of lives of women and children in the greater Indianapolis area.  Additionally, Mary Harden became a member of the PRT board.


    HIV/AIDs Awareness Seminar

In keeping with the national focus on prevention of HIV/AIDS, the Indy Chapter participated in a seminar to learn more about the effects of this disease on our community. This well attended event was held at Witherspoon Presbyterian Church on March 27, 2004.  Coordinated by Mary Harden, the seminar featured our members Dr.Virginia Caine and Dr. Mercy Obeime as presenters.  Lillian Stokes and Faye McDaniel were members of the committee.


    The Lion King

The Academy for Girls and members attended the stage play, The Lion King. This performance was held at the Murat on March 17, 2004.  Prior to the play, members of our organization, along with the girls, enjoyed a full course meal in the Murat’s restaurant.


    Heroism Has No Color

Shoshana Johnson, the first African-American prisoner of war, spoke at Butler University as a part of their Diversity Lecture Series. On March 27th, many NC100BW members gathered at a private reception to meet Ms. Johnson and to present her with a plaque for her courage and courageous service.


    Harlem Girls Choir

The Harlem Girls Choir of New York dazzled Indy with songs from the old and new. The Academy for Girls thoroughly enjoyed this concert, held at The Hilbert Center on April 30, 2004.  Member Detra Perry produced the program guide for the event.


    Indianapolis Top Women’s Reception

On April 15th, the membership, along with invited guest from the community, had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Dr. Clark-Hine.

Dr. Darlene Clark-Hine is a leading historian of the African American experience, particularly as it pertains to the field of black women’s history. The Coalition presented Dr. Clark Hine with a plague for her outstanding work and notable achievements.


    Women’s Business Development Workshop

This informative workshop, held on April 17, 2004 at Glendale Mall’s Community Room, was presented by the Economic Development committee which is chaired by Ruby Ballard Harris. Presenters from the SBA and members Dee Dee Strum, Michelle Smith and Detra Perry did an outstanding job of educating the membership on many of the steps needed to establish a small business.


    The March for Women’s Lives

This historic event took place on April 25th in Washington, D.C. on the National Mall and was reportedly one of the largest marches in history with an estimated 1.15 million people.  The March was a collaborative effort of seven leading national women’s rights groups. Among those in attendance was Jewell Jackson McCabe, chairperson of NC100BW and Jatrice Gaither, CEO of Planned Parenthood and a founding president of our chapter. Colleen Bolden Smith represented the Indianapolis Chapter.

 


    Sexual Harassment/Pay Equity

This event was presented by the Personal and Professional Development committee which is chaired by Jarnell Burks Craig.  Shannon King coordinated the event. Members gathered for a breakfast meeting at the Hoosier Girl Scout office to learn about salary disparities between genders and ethnicities as well as other discriminatory practices. Ice Miller attorney Marty Klaper presented the information.

 

    Breakthrough Women

On June 12, 2004, we honored 5 women for their outstanding achievement. Breakthrough women break barriers and achieve levels of accomplishment far above that which is considered typical in her profession. The honorees were Joyce Rogers, Community Affairs; Paula Corley, Education; Paula Ingram, Arts and Culture;  Beverly Velasquez, Economic Development; and Jennifer Satterfield Siegel, Personal and Professional Development.  The keynote speaker for the 17th annual Breakthrough Woman award ceremony was Deputy Chief Eva Talley Sanders. It was held at the historic Madame C. J. Walker Theatre Center by the Economic Development committee.


    The Mercy Foundation AIDS Awareness

Member Dr. Mercy Obeime founded this non-profit healthcare organization. On July 17th, the foundation hosted the “A Taste of Africa” reception and AIDS program at the Madame Walker to increase the awareness of AIDS in the Indianapolis community and reduce the spread of AIDS in Africa.  In January of 2004, Dr. Obeime delivered about $800,000 of donated medicine and supplies to her homeland, Nigeria. Our chapter was a sponsor of the July 17th event.


    NC100BW National Fundraiser

On October 2, 2004 members Dee Dee Strum, Dorothy Oldham and Mary Harden attended a fundraiser hosted by the National office in New York City.  Our local chapter donated a Jacob Lawrence print for the auction. The event was well attended and the National office.

 


    Gubernatorial Forum

The Community Affairs committee, chaired by Rita Venable, partnered with 100 Black Men to present 2 different forums to feature each gubernatorial candidate. The forums were held at the Walker Theatre Center. Mitch Daniels presented on October 21st and Governor Kernan presented on October 26th.  The African American Coalition, a group of 13 organizations, hosted this event. NC100BW and 100 Black men were the lead organizations.


    Real Estate Investing Workshop

This informative workshop was presented by the Economic Development committee and was held on October 23, 2004 at the East 38th Street Library.

Dee Dee Strum and Michelle Smith were the presenters.


    Gourmet Gents

Gourmet Gents was held on October 31, 2004 at the Montage.  The event,  themed as Masquerade a la Montage, was a festive evening of Mardi Gras styled costuming, wonderful food, stilt walkers, and dancing. The event featured the culinary delights of approximately 35 gents and an estimated 650 people attended. Ann Gray, also know as the “Angel to the Gents” and Michelle Smith co-chaired the event. Mary Harden and Mona Slaton assisted with the Souvenir book. Patzetta Trice directed our hostesses and Jan Lawrence Stofer coordinated the decorating efforts. Dorothy Oldham and Pam Allison handled invitations. The Silent Auction was directed by Mildred Morgan Ball. And, with the help of so many other members, the event was quite the buzz about town.
