Coalition Members on the Move… 2003
  • Pam Allison, after 28 years of service with Delta Airlines, decided to complete her degree and received her B.S. in Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University in Aug. 2003.

 

  • Talitha Jean Anderson is venturing into the salon and boutique business with “Talitha’s Unique Creations”; so stay tuned.

  • Gina Bowles passed her Real Estate Broker examination – first time out, and has received her broker’s license.

 

  • Dr. Virginia Caine was elected President of the American Public Health Association.

 

  • Jan Clark has been appointed Vice President of Leadership Development and Human Resources for the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis.

 

  • Jarnell Burks Craig was selected as Executive Assistant to Congresswoman Julia Carson and District Director for the 7th Congressional District.  Craig was also elected president of The Indianapolis Chapter of Links.

 

  • President Mary Harden received the Sarah Lewis Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service from United Way of Central Indiana.  Harden was also selected to participate in the inaugural class of the Diversity Leadership Academy of Greater Indianapolis underwritten by Anthem Blue Cross-Blue Shield.

 

  • Denise Herd has been promoted to Vice President of Public Relations at Bandy Carroll Hellige Advertising
  • Elaine Johnson, chapter Secretary, was appointed Manager of Benefits and Compensation at Butler University.

 

  • Patricia Jones was appointed to the Board of Directors of Hoosier Capital Girl Scouts Council.

 

  • Dr. Mercy Obeime, Medical Director of St. Francis Neighborhood Health Center, was honored with the Spirit of Women Award.  The award is presented to “ordinary women doing extraordinary things.”  Obeime has founded The Mercy Foundation to subsidize general health care for impoverished people in her native Nigeria.  The foundation will also provide scholarships for diet, exercise and nutrition classes for impoverished Americans suffering obesity.
  • Dorothy Oldham was elected President of the Heron Lake Homeowners Association; she also served the year as Chairperson of the Primary Docent Program, Docent Council, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

 

  • Cynthia Oda was elected to the National Board of the American Association of Grant Professionals.  Oda Enterprises also opened a new office on 24th and Meridian Street.

 

  • Yvonne Perkins was awarded the “Sagamore of the Wabash” award from the Governor of the State of Indiana.

 

  • Detra Perry, Principal Consultant for Reputation Matters, Inc., won the 2003 APEX Award for publication excellence.  Reputation Matters is an Indianapolis-based, minority owned public relations and marketing communications firm. Her award was for designing a brochure titled “Welcome to World Class Training” for the Roche Diagnostics customer training and technical publications department.
  • Chapter Treasurer Deborah Smith was appointed Executive Director of the Hoosier Capitol Girl Scouts Council.

 

  • Chapter lst VP Dee Dee Strum was awarded the Indiana Small Business Person 2003 award by the U.S. Small Business Administration in Oct. 2003. Her company MD Strum Housing Services was listed in Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest growing minority owned small businesses.
  • Artist Carol White had the honor of being selected to represent Indiana in the artistic creation of one of the 2002 White House Christmas Ornaments.  She was honored at a White House ceremony.

 

  • The inaugural issue of “Who’s Who in Black Indianapolis” was launched Sep. 30th with much fanfare.  In the directory were many Indianapolis Chapter members including Nadine Bonds, Brenda Burke, Dr. Virginia Caine, Jarnell Burks Craig, Ann Gray, Anita Harden, President Mary Harden, Financial Secretary Barbara Howard, Janice Lawrence-Stofer, Dr. Mercy Obeime, Past President Yvonne Perkins, Mona Slaton, Treasurer Deborah Hearn Smith, 1st VP and National Board Member Dee Strum, and Patzetta Trice.  Our chapter founder Attorney Fay Williams was honored in the directory as a “Living Legend.”
