2004 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

COLLEEN BOLDEN SMITH

Dear Members:

At the end of my first year as president, it is natural to reflect upon our organization. I am extremely proud of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women- Indianapolis Chapter, Incorporated in particular, and pleased to be associated with such a distinguished group nationally. Let me clearly express my gratitude for all that you do. Given the fact that we are a group of leaders, busy in the business of making inroads into many arenas, I am always impressed with our collective ability to show up and show out. It is wonderful to see the spirit of cooperation that emerges when the need arises. It is impressive to see the measurable results that emerge from planning sessions that occur and the end of our already filled work days. This unique ability to pull it all together in spite of all circumstances is certainly an attribute of and tribute to the sisterhood of our great organization.

As much as our success is about team work, it is also about the extraordinary efforts of many talented individuals. Whether it is the member that inspires the heart with her great vision of our future, or one of the founding voices that whispers sage advice in our ears, it is the synergistic effort of the collective that brings out the best of the best. It is the place where old school meets new school to produce magna cum laude graduates who are able to not only talk the talk, but also walk the walk.

Since 1981, the Indianapolis chapter has been on the forefront as activists, working tirelessly to influence issues that affect African-American women. It is our mantra to continue to do so. As we move into the year, we must continue to embrace our mission of leadership development, gender equity and advocacy for women of color. Let 2005 be the year when you truly engage in the opportunities to make a difference in the lives of the girls in the Academy for Girls, women of color in the community at large, and the sisterhood of The National Coalition of 100 Black Women. Let us continue to drive meaningful change by "building partnerships through creative alliances"-today, tomorrow and in the future.

Sincerely,

Colleen Bolden Smith

Worth Repeating

Ours is supposed to be a government in which classes and distinctions melt into a harmonious whole. Until we reach this ideal of government, we will be a distracted, contentious people. --T. Thomas Fortune, 1883
