Letters from the President

2009 Message from the President

It is hard to believe that I have completed my first year of service as President of our great organization.  I can best describe this year as challenging and rewarding and one that leaves me with a sense of pride.     We celebrated 25 years as a chapter committed to continuing the legacy created by our chapter founders.

Looking back over the past twelve months our program committees were quite active and committed their time and talent to develop our girls in the Academy for Girls.   Our 2008 Breakthrough Women program once again recognized some our community’s most outstanding women.  As a result, a partnership was developed with Martin University to help educate our young ladies with financial assistance if they choose to attend the University after graduation.  We were recognized with a Community Award from the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana in appreciation for the support we give to those programs that help support and nurture our Academy for Girls.  The United Way of Central Indiana now recognizes the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Indianapolis Chapter, Inc. as an agency to receive United Way contributions.  For the second year, we were identified as one of four non profit organizations to receive funds from Mickey’s Camp for Women.  Our recent Gourmet Gents fundraiser was truly a success.

We are indeed opening doors, developing partnerships, and creating opportunities to receive financial support for our programs.  We must be responsible and use these resources wisely to be true to our mission to be “advocates on behalf of women of color through national and local actions and strategic alliances that promote its national and international agendas on leadership development and on gender equity in health, education and economic development”.

I hope I can call on you to commit your time and talent as we continue the work we have been called to do.  It has been my pleasure to serve and connect with each of you.

Sincerely,

Betty Gilliam

FInal Message from the Outgoing President

My two year term as president of our chapter has come to a close.  I leave with a sense of accomplishment of the goals I set out to accomplish, but also with a sense of “loose ends” of those tasks left to be done.  Time truly does fly when you create and accomplish goals with those who share the same vision.

During this year I witnessed and experienced a renewal of excitement in the organization.  Many of you responded to the challenges I placed before you to step up and say “I will do it’!   I ask each of you to rededicate yourselves today to the mission and goals of this organization.

I continue to be impressed with the excitement and dedication each class of new members brings to the organization.  The diversity in age and professional experience only makes us stronger as an organization.  I have developed and nurtured friendships and mentor relationships that I know will last a life time.

We feel a strong sense of pride as we see one of our chapter founders and past president, Dee Strum perfectly positioned to assume the role as national president of this fine organization.  We must support her as she reshapes the vision and direction of this organization on both the national and local levels.  What an exciting time!  We have also positioned ourselves to be the host chapter for the 2011 or 2013 national biennial conference.  These challenges and opportunities exemplify the statement that the road to leadership in the National Coalition of 100 Black Women starts right here in Indianapolis.

Thank you for allowing me to serve in this leadership role.  As I pass on the torch to our new president, let us stand behind her, beside her and lift her up to continue the work before us.

Best regards,

Betty Gilliam

Greetings!

It it my great pleasure to serve as President of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Indianapolis Chapter as we move beyond or 25 years of service in the Indianapolis area. We have a rich history in the Indianapolis community as we have focused on “building partnerships through creative alliances” through project partnerships with various community and corporate entities.  Through our many programs and projects we will continue our commitment to empowering Black women politically, socially, culturally, and economically.  This indeed is a special honor.

President
